What will I be doing?

You will complete a variety of training at one of our training centres in either Eakring, Tipton or Taunton completing a mix of safety and basic technical training. For non-engineering roles you may attend college or have online learning.

There’s more to it

You will all begin your knowledge based training that is required for the apprenticeship (this will be with an external vocational or academic provider) and will also begin gathering work-based evidence/completing projects to support your apprenticeship work logs/portfolios. You will also spend time working alongside managers and colleagues, developing a sound understanding of your business area. 

Year two involves continuing with academic qualifications and continuing to build your skills, spending time at our academy centres, and learning on the job with the support of your manager.

Some of our programmes extend over a third or fourth year. You’ll spend most of your time on site, putting your training into practice and setting the foundation you need to go far.

Project Controls, Electricity Transmission
Planning schedules, managing costs and solving problems: it’s all in a day’s work for our Project Controls team. Every project we execute needs a safe set of hands guiding it from start to finish: as part of this team, you’ll be those hands.

Project Planner, Electricity Transmission
Planning, prioritising and optimising the construction and maintenance of electricity transmission systems. It’s a vital role, and in the Planning team, that’s what you’ll be doing.

Transmission Network Control Centre (TNCC), Electricity Transmission
In the TNCC you will be at the heart of real-time control of the high voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales. You could be part of our 24/7 Control Room. Or you could be part of our 'day office' team. Most importantly, you will be right on the front line of the electricity industry.

Substation, Electricity Transmission
The National Transmission System is monitored and protected by an integrated control system, and you’ll be a specialist in looking after it. Setting maintenance teams to work, commissioning new substation equipment: it’ll be down to you to keep everything shipshape.

Asset Lifecycle, Electricity Transmission
Looking at asset policy, technical specifications and type registration, asset health and technical strategy as well as helping to develop technical solutions to asset replacement and generator connection challenges.

Engineering Services, Electricity Transmission
Providing technical support to Electricity Transmission Operations during maintenance activities, investigating equipment failures, or determining risk mitigation strategies; Transmission Engineers understand the fundamentals of the electricity transmission system, apply them to a wide range of complex equipment types, and have the desire to solve problems.

Planning and Design, Electrical Distribution
Responsible for the design, costing and quoting of projects such as new electricity supplies, and the replacement, diversion & reinforcement of existing electricity network assets. The role of a Planning & Design Trainee involves detailed technical discussions with customers, architects, public authorities and landowners together with a sound and pragmatic appreciation of complex engineering problems.

Operations Delivery, Electrical Distribution
Specialised in electrical fitting, underground cables, overhead lines, plant equipment, civil schemes and protection activities. As a Trainee Operational Delivery Engineer, you will be involved with planning and network design services including the installation and commissioning of complex schemes on the network and at operational sites. You will be working outside in all weathers to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Electricity Distribution system.

Design Engineer, Electrical Distribution
As a Design Engineer (office based) you will specialise in the design of substations energised at up to 132,000 volts, preparing detailed project-specific designs/drawings/specifications and schedules. These designs would relate to both the physical attributes of substations and also the control systems therein.

Telecoms, Electrical Distribution
Responsible for designing, installing, commissioning and supporting telecommunications services across the region. As a Telecoms Apprentice, you'll work in a 
variety of comms services including radio communications for monitoring the electricity network, Mobile Radio for all energy distribution vehicles, Data Communications between NGED Offices and many other associated technologies.

Our Finance function delivers the insights that drive our financial outperformance and long-term value. As a Finance Apprentice you’ll gain exposure to different parts of our business and be an integral part of the team from the start, assisting with planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and commentary.
