National Grid is hiring a Engineer for our Intelligent Substation Design and Standards department in Northborough, MA. This is a hybrid role, with approximately 2-3 days a week in the office.

Job Purpose
This engineer will work as part of an experienced and innovative team to review, update, and develop substation standards needed to support substation capital projects including distribution and transmission interconnections projects, and emerging technologies. Standards support new and existing distribution and transmission substations throughout National Grids US territory which vary in voltage from 4160V to 345kV. This position will also be involved in training on the standards, as part of talent development of substation engineers.
Key Accountabilities
- Prepare and contribute to the development, technical content and implementation of National Grid’s Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, equipment specifications and procedures.
- Technical support provided to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT and Construction.
- Engage various Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in technical discussions to facilitate the development of standards and trainings.
- Attend and participate in conferences and seminars in relation to new technologies, and industry standards to ensure the substation standards are up to date on technology, fostering future adaption and expansion.
- Resolve technical issues that may arise in updating and development of standards.
- Ability to perform calculations and studies (grounding, AC & DC system sizing, lightning protection, lighting, rigid bus design, etc.) to support substation standards design basis.
- Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
- Review single lines, elementaries, physicals (plans and elevations), conduit and cable schedules, lighting, lightning, bill of materials, etc. including manufacturers’ drawings.
- Travel as required to support manufacturer qualifications, and conference participation.
- Information Seeking: Establishes the facts by digging deeper, asking probing questions and challenging initial responses from different sources to ensure designs are fit for purpose.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school.
- Professional Engineering License desirable.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience) in an engineering field related to power systems, engineering, and / or operations and maintenance.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
- Good problem solving and analytical skills.
- knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
- Valid Driver's License with a Safe Driving History Required.
- Able to travel throughout service territories and willing to work extended hours when the job requires. That might include, but is not limited to, system emergencies (storm duties). Driving to other company locations, throughout New England and Upstate NY, for various meetings and training.

Salary - $101,000 - $119,000
