Graduate Development Program

National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is the company’s flagship pipeline program, targeting recent college graduates joining the company in entry-level full-time positions. The GDP is designed to prepare early career professionals for future leadership roles within the organization, aims to support Graduates in developing as leaders, guide their career, and increase their business talents and skills. It provides opportunities for Graduates to explore a broad range of disciplines across our functions and locations, work on a variety of projects, and expand their network.

GDP orientation

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an 4-week orientation, which includes time spent learning the core functions of the business, meeting with our Executive team, and traveling to our different jurisdictional areas. By the end of orientation, you’ll have an in-depth understanding of who National Grid is as a company and how we do business, and will have formed a network with your fellow graduates, as well as senior business leaders, key GDP stakeholders, and GDP Alumni. Graduates also take part in monthly development sessions with their cohort as well as complete a Capstone Project at the end of their first year.

Where will you work?

Following Orientation, Graduates begin working in their hired position. While specific positions vary year to year, past hiring departments have included: Gas Process & Engineering, Electric Process & Engineering, Procurement, Accounting & Finance, Information Technology, Regulation & Pricing, Audit, Fleet Services, Performance Excellence, Customer, Human Resources and Operations. Graduates also take part in quarterly development sessions with their cohort as well as complete a Capstone Project at the end of their first year with the company.

  • Gas process and engineering

    Gas Engineering offers opportunities to chemical, mechanical, control, civil, and structural engineers in system analysis, project management, construction management, and design.

  • Electric process and engineering

    This group studies the delivery system that supplies the distribution networks and systems that supply retail customers, and recommends additions and modifications to meet future performance and reliability requirements both today and in to the future.

  • Finance

    The Finance team acts as strategic advisors to the greater business, providing action-orientated insight beyond the numbers that has a real impact on performance. Opportunities exist within the Finance Business Partnering, Tax, Financial Control, Investor Relations and Audit.

  • Information technology

    IT & Digital seeks to attract and develop high potential talent to enable the clean energy transition for all, deliver for our customers efficiently and ensure we maintain resilient, secure and compliant technology solutions.

  • Customer

    Customer Operations supports the company in serving residential and commercial customers ensuring we meet our customers’ service and energy-related needs in an efficient manner. Opportunities exist in Delivery, Process Enablement, Sales and Solutions, and Product Growth.

  • Procurement

    The Procurement team leads and supports our category strategy and sourcing activities to deliver maximum value from our cost base. The team works to deliver effectiveness across our supply chain while mitigating risk and cultivating a diverse, globally orientated, sustainable supply base.
