Orchestrating our success

  • 36-month finance graduate opportunities

Finance drives our financial performance by providing key business insights. Engaging with all areas of the National Grid business, Finance plays a key role in helping us make sound decisions.

An appropriately balanced financial framework which is transparent, robust and reflects the risks is key to current and future consumers being fairly charged for the networks they use and the services they receive as well as ensuring networks are able to fund future infrastructure efficiently and sustainably.

We ensure a balance is struck between consumers benefitting from sustainably low bills and incentivising continued investment in long term assets which provide benefits over many years.

Through the Finance Graduate Programme, you will undertake three 12-month placements with the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of roles across different types of Finance teams.

Transactional / General Accounting

This type of placement is designed to develop your base level finance knowledge and technical skills. This will usually include:

  • Transactional level accounting, journals and cost centre management.
  • The integrity of the numbers - ensuring the right costs are in the right place at the right time.
  • Understanding of the finance systems and data structures.

Management / Project Accounting

These placements will build on the fundamental knowledge developed in the first placement, applying this further and expanding knowledge of the businesses being supported.

  • Analysing and interpreting project spend to understand trends and identify opportunities.
  • Reporting and commentary for the specific projects.
  • Working with project teams to manage the forecasting and budgeting cycle.

Central Finance Teams

These placements aim to support a broader understanding of National Grid, either at a UK level or National Grid Group Level and focus on consolidation and storytelling/messaging. This could include Financial Planning and Analysis, Regulatory Reporting or Group Management Reporting. There may also be opportunities to join project roles that exist to deliver a specific output. This will broaden your understanding of the business, whilst challenging and developing different skills and could include:

  • Consolidation of UK level reporting for senior stakeholders or external statutory and regulatory reporting.
  • Creation of the company's annual & half-year accounts as well as the regular reporting to the Board and Senior Leadership teams providing visibility of the other National Grid businesses.
  • Funding of the company in the most efficient way possible. Roles could include supporting debt issuances and managing relationships with banks and credit rating agencies.

Business Partnering

Further building on the earlier placements, a business partner role allows you to embed within the business with a focus on providing insight and being a trusted advisor to the teams you support. This will further develop your personal skills such as managing stakeholder and customer relationships.

  • Supporting business and finance initiatives to drive performance and efficiencies.
  • Planning, forecasting & budgeting.
  • Driving value through specific projects.
  • Involvement in investment appraisal and sanctioning.
