Gridtern FAQs
What are the minimum qualifications?
To participate in our Gridtern Program you must:
- Be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program at an accredited institution.
- Continuing your education into the next semester following the internship.
- Accumulated at least 18 credit hours or more.
- Must be willing to submit to a background/medical screening.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Applicants for the Gridtern Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States.
- Be available on designated start date determined by the Early Careers Recruitment Team.
- Have a curious mindset, positive attitude, and be ready to learn!
I have graduated college, does this mean I cannot be a Gridtern?
- Correct. Only students currently enrolled in a degree program are eligible for an internship. However, National Grid does offer full-time employment opportunities such as the Graduate Development Program. To, learn more about our GDP program here.
Are internships paid?
- Yes, National Grid offers competitive paid internships to students.
What internships are available?
National Grid offers internships for all different majors! Such as:
- Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical)
- Finance/Accounting
- Environmental Science
- Marketing
- Business Administration
- Human Resources
- Information Technology/Computer Science
I want to be a Gridtern! Where can I apply?
- Summer opportunities are available for you to apply through our careers website starting in the Fall. Year-round internships are available throughout the year and can be accessed on our careers website. You can find all opportunities here.
I’ve applied! Now what?
- Thank you for your interest and applying! A member of the Early Careers Recruitment team will be reviewing your application. Should your qualifications match our hiring needs we will reach out to discuss next steps. Please see our timeline for specifics on our summer hiring process.

- Yes! We encourage you to apply to all opportunities that would match your education, qualifications and career goals.
I will be a Gridtern this summer! What do I have to look forward to?
- Are you excited to join the Energy Industry at a crucial time and build your network?! Our Summer program starts off with a Day 1 Gridtern Orientation where you get to meet and engage with your fellow Gridterns! You will partake in various events throughout the summer such as: Lunch and Learn Sessions, Site Visits, and Volunteer Opportunities.
Does National Grid pay for relocation?
- We do not assist with relocation costs for internships.
How does the hiring process work?
- Each application is reviewed against our minimum qualifications and the projects our managers have submitted for internships. Applicants whose background meets the requirements will be invited to submit their credentials for role-specific internships. The next step includes an interview with the hiring manager, and after all interviews are conducted, we’ll extend an offer to the strongest candidate for the position.

Going virtual gives the go ahead to US Internships
Many U.S. students due to start internships in the coming months have had them cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic. But we're not letting COVID-19 get in the way of our programmes this summer - instead, we're creating 'virtual internships'.
GRADUATE FAQ’S
What are the minimum qualifications?
To participate in our Graduate Development Program:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution
- Graduated between May of last year and May of current year
- Valid driver’s license with safe driving history
- Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Development Program in June
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States.
- Be available on designated start date determined by the Early Careers Recruitment Team.
- Have a curious mindset, positive attitude, and be ready to learn!
- Please note that specific positions will have additional minimum qualifications.
I’m not graduating this year, does this mean I cannot participate in GDP?
- Correct. Only students who have graduated from a Bachelor’s or Master’s program are eligible for the Graduate Development Program. However, National Grid offers a variety of internship opportunities. If you are still in school and are looking for meaningful work experience, learn more about our Gridtern program here.
Are Graduate Development Program participants paid?
- Yes, as a Graduate you are a full-time employee at National Grid. We offer competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits program. Check out our Benefits here.

I will be a Graduate this year! What do I have to look forward to?
- Are you excited to join the Energy Industry at a crucial and innovative time?! Our Graduate Development Program kicks off with an 3-week Orientation with your fellow Graduates. Throughout these weeks you will gain an in-depth overview of National Grid, build your network throughout the company, have exposure to many senior leaders, and travel throughout our service territories.
What happens after the 3-week Orientation?
- After Orientation, you will enter your full-time position that you were hired for with a wealth of knowledge and expansive network that will help jumpstart your career at National Grid! Throughout you first year at National Grid, you will continue to develop your leadership skills though development sessions, a Hackathon project, a GDP alumni mentor, and coaching experiences through your first year with National Grid.
Does National Grid pay for relocation?
- We do not offer relocation packages for Graduate Development Program participants.
How does the hiring process work?
- Each application is reviewed against our program minimum qualifications and the requirements our managers have submitted for their positions. Applicants whose background meets the requirements will be invited to take part in a digital interview/assessment process. Successful candidates will then be invited to participate in our final round interview process with members of the hiring team. During the final round interview you’ll have the ability to showcase your skills and strengths through a panel interview as well as a group case exercise. After all interviews are conducted, we’ll extend an offer to the strongest candidate for the position.
