Job Purpose

The Program Manager will join Energy Procurement to support and coordinate the long term, wholesale gas supply purchases necessary to meet customer requirements in all US regions. The role requires strong written and oral communication skills and collaboration and interface amongst a variety of stakeholders within the organization. An ability to prioritize and balance multiple assignments simultaneously is a must and the ability to build good relationships with all levels of stakeholders is key. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee National Grid’s end to end procurement process for long term gas supply (structure transactions, conduct RFP process, negotiate transaction agreements, ensure proper entry into transaction and contract management systems) including vendor outreach and relationship management for sources of compressed (CNG), renewable (RNG) and liquified (LNG) natural gas.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand the Company’s gas supply requirements and acquire the necessary upstream assets.
  • Negotiate precedent agreements and service agreements for the storage and/or transportation of gas with interstate and Canadian pipeline companies.
  • Maintain an awareness of the interstate pipeline grid, proposed pipeline projects, and developments in traditional and emerging gas supply basins and pooling locations and initiate upstream projects and purchase agreements that satisfy the company’s requirements.
  • Prepare and present reports and requests for approval of transactions by internal risk committees. Respond to additional inquiries on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Maintain an awareness of statutes/regulations affecting gas procurement and trading activities.
  • Participate in state regulatory proceedings by providing support to other National Grid organizations, prepare testimony, supporting and sponsoring data inquiries and serving as a Company witness as needed.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required


  • Support the team in liaising with other teams to understand short-term limitations, commercial implications, and recommend mitigating actions.
  • Provide input to the development and implementation of hedging, procurement, and forward strategies to deliver optimized system position and minimize overall costs of imbalance.
  • Coach, train, and lead team members in day-to-day activities.



  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, economics or related field (MBA or legal degree a plus)
  • Experience in the procurement of energy assets including pipeline capacity and gas supply sources including LNG, CNG and RNG.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements at Federal and State levels
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge of natural gas markets, gas supply sources and the interstate pipeline grid.
  • Ability to negotiate precedent agreements, pipeline storage & transportation agreements, gas purchase agreements and asset management agreements.
  • Knowledge of FERC and other regulatory/statutory requirements affecting the purchase, sale and or transportation of natural gas in interstate commerce, including ratemaking and rate design principles and other regulations/policies affecting the cost or operational characteristics of National Grid’s upstream gas supply portfolio.
  • Knowledge of statutory/regulatory requirements of the various federal and state utility commissions in connection with the procurement of gas supply/pipeline capacity and gas cost incentive mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of operational issues affecting the purchase and/or trading of natural gas, credit/risk management practices, energy trading systems, and contract management practices
