Job Purpose
To operate the New England transmission system in a safe, secure, reliable, and efficient manner in accordance with all FERC, NERC, NPCC, ISO-NE, and National Grid requirements, standards, and procedures.
Key Accountabilities
· Ensure the safe, secure, reliable, and efficient operation of the National Grid’s New England Transmission system.
· Provide 24x7 real-time analysis, monitoring, emergency response, and switching of the transmission system.
· Develop and implement policies and procedures for the operation of the National Grid Transmission system.
· Ensure compliance with all applicable FERC, NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE standards.
· Support the development and implement short and medium-term strategic and tactical plans as required to meet department and business unit strategies, goals, and objectives.
· Plan, and organize the work activities of the control room staff in the operation of the transmission system.
· Develop and maintain a highly skilled and trained, well qualified work force.
· Develop an error-free environment
- The consequences of control room errors or omissions include personal injury, widespread outages, system-wide disturbances, and NERC fines of up to $1M per day.
· Exercise the normal supervisory functions of employee selection, assignment, transfer, training and development, inclusion and diversity, safety, counselling, discipline, and termination. · Coordinate the work activities of employees, and establish clearly defined goals and standards of employee performance.
· Represent National Grid on national and state level committees.
· Maintain close and effective working relationships with the EMS staff, ISO-NE, regulators, field work force, engineering, and distribution control rooms as well as with neighbouring utilities, and transmission customers.
· Coordinate major capital construction projects including but not limited to; hosting conference calls, writing energization procedures, initiating updates to EMS displays and comments pages, updating system one-line displays, etc.
· Maintain NERC Reliability Coordinator certification.
· Maintain Clearance and Control authorization.
· 24/7 On Call responsibilities
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
· Considerable experience with and a thorough understanding of the operation of the electric transmission system.
· Extensive knowledge of power system operations and market operations. ·
Detailed knowledge of EMS, state estimator, load flow, and contingency analysis.
· Familiarity with Company policies, procedures, budget process, and labor agreement.
· Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
· Ability to effectively make significant real-time operating decisions.
· Ability to evaluate alternate courses of action, and to make decisions against a background of ambiguity and uncertainty.
· Proven leadership and interpersonal skills.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Demonstrated record of delivering results.
Qualifications
· Degree in Engineering or 5 years experience as a Security/System Operator or equivalent experience in System Operations.
· Significant electric operation and control room experience.
· Thorough familiarity with shift operations.
· NERC Reliability Certification or the ability to obtain certification within 1 year.
· Clearance and Control Authorization, or the ability to obtain authorization within 2 months.
