The position is in Northborough, MA. Hybrid working schemes between remote and office are in place.
Job Purpose
National Grid’s Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) department provides IT support services for the applications and environments that drive the company’s critical operations. The Platform Engineer position will be part of the team supporting the New England jurisdiction’s Energy Management System (EMS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) application. The EMS/SCADA application is critical for the monitoring and control of the transmission and distribution electrical networks. The successful candidate will join a team responsible for supporting the overall 24x7 operation of National Grid’s EMS/SCADA.
Key Accountabilities
• Coordinate with control center operations and engineering & planning groups to maintain and update the EMS model.
• Provide day-to-day EMS support by effectively responding to the needs of control room operating staff, field personnel, and other end users in respect modeling, real-time state estimation and security analysis. Including but not limited to limits, ratings, D-curves, and generation & load patterns.
• Interact with the regional ISO and surrounding LCCs to coordinating modeling and data transfer between systems.
• Maintain an operator training simulator and coordinate with training groups to help develop training scenarios.
• Actively update and maintain the annual Load Shed and Voltage Reduction Plans in the EMS databases.
• Actively participate in support and troubleshooting problems in all aspects of the EMS/SCADA system, and specifically data acquisition issues:
o Data circuit and communication issues as they related to the real-time SE / SA.
o Protocols used by the EMS to collect data from field Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). These protocols include DNP3.0.
o The Inter-Control Center Protocol (ICCP)
• Actively maintain and administer the National Grid EMS remote access interfaces. These interfaces encompass the PI Historian application and EMS Thin Client.
• Participate in on-call rotation as required to support operations department and maintain high EMS availability.
Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electric Engineering technology is required. Specific focus on Power Systems is required
• Previous experience working in control center operations or IT support is desired
• Experience in supporting Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems; Data Acquisition knowledge and protocols used in SCADA/EMS systems for power system operation and planning; power system modeling and advanced application functions on an Energy Management System is highly desired
• Knowledge of the NERC CIP 001 – 014 Cyber Security Standards and requirements
• Electric utility market systems experience (ISO-NE and NY-ISO)
• Experience with multi-processing programming
• Candidate should have a basic understanding of networking infrastructure and protocols including Routers, Switches, Hubs, TCP/IP, Firewalls and SNMP.
• Working knowledge of RTU functions and RTU protocols, such as DNP 3.0.
• Working knowledge of Windows and Linux Operating Systems
• Working knowledge of commercial relational database packages (Oracle, SQL, Postgres) is highly desired
• Experience working with commercial control systems such as Hitachi/ABB, GE, or OSI is highly desired
• Must possess ability to work independently and manage workload in a fast-paced environment
• Must be able to work effectively with remote teams and management

Salary
$112k - $132k a year
