National Grid is seeking an Electrical Engineer for our Protection and Telecom Engineering group in Waltham, MA.

Job Purpose

The IEC 61850 department is looking for an Engineer to provide support for the integration of IEC 61850 technology at National Grid. This group is responsible for implementation of network communication and automation within the substation, through the IEC 61850 standard.

Key Accountabilities

Asset Management

  • Assist in the development and support the integration of IEC 61850 into substation equipment.
  • Perform investment, conceptual and detailed design engineering for transmission and distribution substations using IEC 61850
  • Assist in the development and support of acceptance testing and maintenance requirements for IEC 61850.
  • Provide detailed technical scope and cost estimate documentation for use by both internal and external design resources
  • Perform engineering calculations and studies to support the project scope
  • Provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplined project team.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings and engineering recommendations
  • Support Project Manager and Project Management Processes
  • Participate in project estimating and economic analysis
  • Coordinate with design consultants and interface with internal design staff
  • Review drawings associated with projects, including manufacturers’ equipment

 

Design Standards, Procedures and Work Practices

  • Provide assistance in the development of substation automation and IEC 61850 Engineering policies and standards related to protection and control systems and equipment.
  • Represent the company on industry committees and participate in the formulation of industry-wide standards and practices.

 

Operations and Engineering Support

  • Review and develop the IEC 61850 test lab for troubleshooting, testing, and developing standards.
  • Coordinate with / and provide technical assistance to Operations, Design and Field Technicians with issues related to IEC 61850.
  • Manage the day to day relationship with relevant internal parties or employees in order to understand their requirements, deliver appropriate, customized solutions and advice; build cross-functional working in line with National Grid policies and processes.
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

 

  • Able to lead interdisciplinary technical teams to evaluate solution options and develop project scopes, cost estimates and project schedules.

 

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited 4-year institution.
  • 3 years of related experience
  • Valid driver’s license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy
  • Knowledge of network hardware, configuring LANs, and software maintenance is a plus.
  • Knowledge of power systems is a plus.
  • Demonstrate effective communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Display leadership experience in at least one of the following:
    • College leadership position (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics.)
    • Leadership and/or volunteer experience, in and/out of the college environment
    • Experienced a full or part-time job while at college and acquired relevant work experience.
