Job Purpose

We are currently looking for Rock Stars that want to be part of a growing IT Global Solutions Development Team. Our IT ambition is to transform National Grid into the leader of the digital energy future. This person must be a self-starter, energetic and have a passion for technology.


The Solution Architect is responsible to design technical solutions in response to specific business needs that are fit for purpose, compliant and adhere to all National Grid operational, architectural and design standards and principles. Ensure the integrity of solution designs from concept through implementation, balancing the architectural concerns of projects with concerns of the enterprise. Ensure consideration of all design alternatives and provide technical guidance to wider project team and business stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify, Own and Support the Delivery of technical solutions for assigned project
  • Provides technical direction for the design of complex and large scale systems solutions to effectively meet business needs. This includes the analysis of multiple solution options.
  • Provide all design related services, at the blueprinting level under the direction of a Lead Domain/Enterprise Architect, Project Manager.
  • Partners with the Enterprise Architecture team on the creation of the conceptual architecture that addresses the high level business requirements
  • Market Analysis of the Solution Options
  • End to End Solution Design, Capabilities and Services View
  • Options Analysis & Solution Recommendations including technology and deployment options & Interface needs
  • Authors complex macro level technical designs that define how the functional and non- functional requirements will be technically enabled
  • Ensure the integrity of solution designs through detail design, build and implementation.
  • Participates in Solution Architecture Reviews for applicable projects.
  • Provides guidance to an extended project team related to the solution architecture and technical design.  Assists and advises project teams in the configuration, testing, implementation and support of technical solutions.
  • Authors sizing and detailed estimates for complex new project requests.  Participates in the creation of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) models for large and complex projects.  Maintains estimate artifacts for the solution designs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide thought leadership on innovative technical solutions to business stakeholders.
  • Identify options that maximize reuse and minimize overheads to operating budgets. 
  • Consults on design approaches to solving visible and complex business problems.  Provides technical subject matter expertise and insight related to the business applications in a given domain.
  • Provides input into design best practice methodologies and standards.  Defines standards for specific
  • processes and/or components.
  • Recommends technical solution alternatives based on variances of scope, budget, and timeline.
  • Recommends IT driven initiatives to enable key technical characteristics (Availability, Recoverability, Scalability, Performance characteristics, etc.) of business applications/services in their area of expertise.
  • Ensure that solutions conform to the National Grid Enterprise Architecture.
  • Ensure solutions are compliant to National Grid’s policies.
  • Furthering and promote the Strategic vision of Enterprise and Domain Architecture.
  • Knowledge of various deployment and hosting environments and platforms (On Premise, Cloud, SaaS/PaaS/IaaS, MS Azure, and AWS)
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Middleware and Integration techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic Security concepts and design practices
  • Knowledge and experience designing High Availability and Disaster recovery aspects of the solutions 
  • Knowledge of the Data Management and Reporting techniques
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and implementing mobile solutions
  • Obtain all required approvals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


  • Educated to degree level in Computer Science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience applying standard architectures and patterns within solution designs.
  • 7-10 years of Experience developing Solution Architectures.
  • Knowledge of business analysis techniques, tools and requirements gathering.
  • Extensive experience interpreting functional needs and writing or editing solution designs for new systems, systems changes or system enhancements.
  • Technology design experience which includes Performance, Security, Availability, as well as Operations, Monitoring and Support.
  • Knowledge of basic networking concepts and design practices including; HTTP/S, TCP/IP, load balancers, firewalls, proxies.
  • Knowledge of various hosting environments and platforms (DC On Prem, Cloud, Azure, IaaS/PaaS, AWS)
  • Knowledge of integration techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work both independently and within cross functional project teams that span multiple time-zones.
  • Minimum of 5 years solution design experience at an enterprise level.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Good stakeholder management and influencing skills at project stakeholder level.
  • Ability to multi-task.

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) (i.e. Esri, SmallWorld)  ESRI products suite (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, Portal for ArcGIS), Schneider ArcFM.
  • Experience with Oracle Unifier, Primavera P6, IBM Maximo, SAP.
  • Experience in Utility Enterprise Asset Management and solutions


  • Ability to work independently as individual contributor as well as lead both onsite and offsite teams through the completion of key capabilities that will help drive and support the business. Be a leader of all managed team members gaining respect of all while promoting a fun, delivery oriented environment. Interact with leaders giving status updates and recommended strategies into the options we have for each release. A track record of directing, inspiring, and motivating others to achieve results which exceed what is believed to be possible.


  • Must be able to communicate effectively to all members of the organization in person and during remote conferences. Ability to understand through communication the needs of the business and then relay that information to the appropriate business and/or technical resources. Ability to clearly explain application concepts and procedures to appropriate staff as necessary. Display excellent communication skills by being able to converse with technical and non-technical people; write concise and clear reports; and make effective presentations.

  • Current experience with Waterfall  and Agile methodologies (SAFe experience is highly desirable)
