Record to Report is responsible for the processing of financial information, posting of journals and producing regulatory and performance reports. As a graduate you’d be involved in posting month end journals, ensuring their accuracy and timeliness, performance analysis and reconciliations, and delivering a clean financial year end. You’ll gain a robust understanding of double entry bookkeeping and National Grid’s financial systems and control environment.
Finance Business Partners (FBP) form the connection between National Grid’s businesses and the finance function. It is the job of FBP teams to understand both the financial and non-financial drivers of success, as well as the ever changing regulatory, commercial, and political contexts in which our business operate. Skills which FBP’s use day to day include, persuasive communication, story telling and influencing, as well as a strategic mindset.
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and Controllership, ensure the integrity of our internal and external reporting as well as the control environment to influence successful business outcomes. This also requires the teams to explain financial results, and find linkages between regulation, financial plans, performance and statutory reporting. You’ll gain a strong understanding of accounting principles, forecasting and budgeting, whilst developing problem solving and stakeholder management skills.
The Treasury function is responsible for ensuring that the company has the right funding, liquidity, and currency, in the right place, at the right time, and plays a key role in managing a variety of external stakeholders including our debt investors, banks, and credit rating agencies. Whilst working in Treasury you can expect to develop strong analytical and stakeholder management skills, as well an understanding of external financial markets.
Investor Relations (IR) is the link between National Grid and the investment community. It maintains key relationships with equity investors; helping ensure the market has optimal information to evaluate the company’s financial and operational performance and maintain a fair valuation. The team also provides market insight to help inform the Group’s strategy and investment decisions. In IR you are likely to develop financial, communication, relationshipmanagement, and strategic skills.
Corporate Audit helps the business achieve its objectives by providing objective “independent assurance” on the effectiveness of governance, risk management and internal controls. Audits span all business areas and functions of National Grid, providing a unique opportunity to see the breadth and variety of processes throughout the company. In Audit you could develop positive relationships, perform to deadlines, bring clarity out of ambiguity, and develop report writing skills.
The UK Tax function deals with indirect VAT), corporation and employment tax as well as group tax reporting. The function ensures that the correct tax is paid and in a timely manner as well as using tax experts to interpret and apply tax legislation to determine the tax treatment of different situations. Working in Tax is a complex but rewarding experience as you learn to complete tax returns, report tax liabilities and apply tax knowledge to a variety of tax transactions.
A team of IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and ESG (Environmental Social Governance) reporting specialists, responsible for National Grid plc’s reporting to the market. The team provides expertise across the Group, and manage the relationship with the Group Auditors. In Group Reporting you will likely develop strong technical accounting, and assurance understanding, as well as stakeholder management and influencing skills.
During your 36 months placement with us, we offer three 12 month placements across all our opportunties to help support your superpowered career with us. Though our head office is in located in Warwick, there are opportunities to work in London, Bristol, or one of our other offices around the UK.
Our starting salary for undergraduates is £33,154 and £34,364 for those with a masters degree. We also offer a £2,000 joining bonus, £200 per month accommodation allowance for the first 18 months, and an annual performance based bonus!
As part of the scheme you will have the choice of completing either your ACCA or CIMA chartership through a Level 7 apprenticeship and upon completion you will receive a £2,400 bonus.
