My first placement was in the Strategy team, gaining insight into how the strategy for the company is developed, whilst learning a range of new skills around business architecture and risk management. I then went onto NGV for my broadening placement and worked on the Viking Link Interconnector. This placement allowed me to understand the commercial side to the construction project process and I gained technical/engineering knowledge of cables, HDDs and convertor stations through site visits.

My final placement is in the Corporate Affairs team, in Public Affairs and Policy. This placement has allowed me to develop skills I wanted to gain more exposure to, such as writing briefs, end-of-week notes for execs, and attending Parliamentary events to gain insight on how the team can help influence and shape energy policy.

What degree did you do and what made you want to come to the ESO?

My background is very different as I studied Biomedical Science at Aston University. After completing my degree and working in a lab, I knew the career wasn’t for me due to the repetitive nature of the work. I wanted to find something that would allow me to develop myself, embrace my different background and transfer my existing skills into a new line of work, opening the opportunities to explore what I enjoy.

The ESO was appealing to me, as the graduate scheme allowed me to go on a variety of placements and teams, which kept work interesting and exciting. On top of all that, the ESO’s net-zero ambition was another motivation; knowing your input and decision-making can help contribute towards the net-zero journey is incredible.

What is your favourite memory or best thing about being on the grad scheme and why?

During the scheme, I have done three amazing placements that have all allowed me to develop a plethora of skills and gain insight and knowledge in the ESO, whilst exposing me to a range of networks and contacts.

  • I have many fond memories, including meeting all the other graduates on the scheme! However, for me, my favourite memory was getting to travel to Copenhagen for a contractor meeting during my placement at NGV.

I’m also looking forward to travelling to Brussels in my current placement, to understand energy policy in the EU, whilst also attending European Parliament! I feel lucky to have experienced all the above on the graduate scheme and look forward to my future career at the ESO.
