About The Role

Reporting to the Head of Agile Delivery the Program Manager is responsible for planning, execution, and successful delivery of strategic programmes within IT & Digital, ensuring alignment with business goals, managing risks, dependencies, and stakeholder expectations.  A key driver of change, they will collaborate across multiple workstreams, champion best practices in program governance, stakeholder engagement, and Agile delivery. As a subject matter expert, they will foster collaboration, continuous improvement, and adaptability. 

 

They will develop and implement action plans to ensure readiness for change and manage financial budgets and forecasts. Additionally, they will guide project teams, manage change control processes, and ensure that project deliverables are completed within agreed cost, timescale, and resource budgets. The role will contribute to our vision by driving successful change and improvement initiatives that align with our organisational objectives and stakeholder needs.

 

In addition to program leadership, this role is also expected to remove blockers, solve problems and make decisions for their teams while also defining and executing the strategy for their own discipline. The role will also be expected to deputise for the Head of Agile Delivery, support the program and project community, and promote a positive, agile culture across Technology and the wider business.

 

National Grid is hiring a Programme Manager for our Electricity Distribution (NGED) department. We offer flexibility regarding your location; however, you will need to be onsite at either our Bristol or Plymouth office for our quarterly planning meetings.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement program strategies that align with company objectives, ensuring successful delivery of IT solutions. Develop and maintain a program plan, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
  • Lead and mentor cross-functional teams, promoting strong collaboration. Coordinate and lead program meetings and workshops.
  • Ensure the programme is delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define program requirements and objectives, ensuring alignment with business goals. Establish and maintain relationships with key program stakeholders, including vendors and external partners and acts as a single point of contact.
  • Identify, document, and manage risks, assumptions, issues, and dependencies (RAID) across all workstreams.
  • Develop mitigation strategies and proactively address potential blockers to programme success.
  • Oversee program budgets, ensuring efficient resource allocation and financial accountability.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement. Monitor program progress and provide regular status updates to stakeholders. Evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure all programs comply with NGED/NG governance standards and regulations. Ensure program deliverables meet quality standards and are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Support Agile delivery principles across technology ensuring best practice adoption by peers and understood by stakeholders. 

About You

  • Programme & Project Management Expertise: Strong experience in leading complex program, within an IT & Digital environment.
  • Agile & Lean Methodologies: Experience with Agile frameworks (SAFe, Scrum, Kanban) and their application in large-scale programmes. Thriving in a rapidly changing environment that shifts priorities to deliver NGED commitments.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with digital technologies, agile methodologies, and project management tools.
  • Decision Making: Strong decision making ability to ensure successful program outcomes.
  • Team Collaboration: Have both interpersonal and people skills that facilitate smooth interactions between themselves and all parties they interact with as well as enable the smooth performance of tasks in crossfunctional settings.
  • Strategic Thinker: Ability to align programme objectives with business goals and drive long-term success. Possessing strong decision making skills to define a clear programme vision and ensure successful programme outcomes.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with good interpersonal skills to effectively convey ideas and updates to diverse stakeholders.
  • Leadership & Coaching: Ability to lead and inspire teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and high performance. Be a role model within the delivery community and wider NGED organisation. Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire cross-functional teams (coaching, training, facilitating and collaborating)
  • Commercial Awareness: Strong financial acumen and understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and business case development.

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £65,000 – £80,000 – dependent on capability


As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
