About the role
Engineering Manager - UK wide - occasional travel required (hybrid working)
We are aiming to re-wire the UK. As part of this, there is a huge amount of infrastructure being built offshore and onshore. We need broad engineering expertise to lead a new era of HVDC technology deployment in the UK, and as a engineering leader you play a central role in developing and delivering HVDC solutions to meet the UK’s ambitious energy plans.
What you'll be getting up to
- Leading engineering development and design resource to develop HVDC engineering conceptual solutions through to initial operations.
- Manage engineering risks and opportunities that will arise as we develop, construct and expand National Grid’s transmission network into a marine environment.
- Manage and coordinate engineering assurance activities that cover HVDC and offshore systems across the range of marine grid projects.
- Provide engineering direction and oversight to some of the UK’s largest major works contracts, joint ventures and framework contracts.
- Help to maintain a centre of excellence for offshore and HVDC engineering capability and talent, this includes creating developmental programmes for new engineering skills.
- Contribute with the wider engineering team to embed lessons learnt and best industry practice.
- Nurture and maintain effective professional relationships with all stakeholders, partners, vendors and service providers.
- Help build, develop and promote National Grid’s reputation in the field of HVDC, across a broad network and with key industry forums, such as Government, OFGEM the IET and CIGRE.
- Lead on matters of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability
- Promote engineering excellence across the Group and with key external stakeholders.
About you
- Experience gained across a range of engineering disciplines, critically in new electricity transmission technologies such as HVDC.
- Experience of working with a range of people to influence the engineering perspective to the development of new business ideas.
- Experience of establishing and working within joint ventures
- Experience of working with original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) on electrical transmission assets
- Excellent influencing, negotiating and communication skills
- Demonstrable knowledge of applicable business practices, including risk management, resource planning, contract management cost-benefit analysis.
