Lead Quantity Surveyor

Location:

GB

Division:  OHL & Subs
Job Type:
Requisition Number:  64676
Department:  Electricity Transmission - Non-Operations
Job Function:  Capital Project Delivery

About the role

At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it’s so much more than that. National Grid supplies us with the environment to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don’t plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark. So, join us as a Lead Quantity Surveyor, within our Central region, and find your superpower.

You’ll have the opportunity to play a key role in the UK’s transition to clean energy.  Providing commercial and contractual support to project teams on large- scale construction projects, you’ll enjoy great variety and the chance to work on some of the biggest, most exciting infrastructure projects.

Our customers include everyone who uses electricity in England and Wales. Acting on behalf of these people, you’ll help ensure that we deliver our projects in the most commercially effective way.

This role provides a fantastic stepping stone into management as you’ll be the link between management and more junior Quantity Surveyors.

You’ll lead in reviewing entitlements and assessing the time and cost impact of complex compensation events, providing sound and reasoned advice to project teams to assist in the resolution of any complex contractual disputes.

Supporting and managing others in procurement events, including the commercial assessment of tenders, you’ll lead negotiations on contract deviations, and suggest post-contract amendments to deliver the best value for National Grid.

You’ll support junior team member development, ensuring governance processes and procedures are followed, with effective management of risk, accurate cost reporting and forecasting.

What you'll need

Methodical and process driven, you are good at gathering data and information to accurately assess an issue or event. You can analyse complex disputes to arrive at a reasoned decision and are flexible enough to pick up new challenges at short notice.

You can deal positively with people at all levels, succinctly presenting facts and providing contractual advice. You can mentor others and develop their skills to build the overall capability of a team.

You are confident in making independent decisions using your own skill and judgement, and willing to challenge the decisions made by others.

You have a degree in quantity surveying or a related discipline such as construction management or construction law. You have extensive experience of quantity surveying and a strong understanding of NEC contracts.

We’d like you to already be a Chartered Surveyor, or at least working towards becoming one. Ideally you have experience on infrastructure projects, and you might have a contractor or consultant background, for example.

You also have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK. There is an expectation that you’ll be able to travel to sites on a weekly basis, but as part of our hybrid working model, you’ll also have the flexibility to work from home, a National Grid office, or site.

What's in it for you?

Starting salary of £58,900 - £74,000 dependant on experience – plus an additional Market Supplement of £3,000, plus an Annual Performance Based Bonus.

  • 26 days’ annual leave, plus eight statutory days.
  • A Job requirement Company Car
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long as it’s relevant to your role.
  • Access to several flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to numerous apps which support health, fitness and wellbeing.

We will support you in your career progression with National Grid and provide support and guidance for those wishing to achieve their MRICS status.
