Division:  Human Resources
Job Type:
Requisition Number:  54876
Department:  National Grid Ventures
Job Function:  Sales and Commercial

About the role

We’re connecting more clean energy to power the things you love.

There’s never been a better time to work in energy. It’s a time of opportunity and transformation as we strive to provide a greener, cleaner energy system for the country. As a result of this, we're seeing unprecedented growth in our network and are looking to grow our Electricity Transmission (ET) Property Lands Team.

We are looking for a Senior Surveyor / Surveyor to lead on the delivery of new infrastructure projects within our Customer Connections team to help facilitate The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations. Our infrastructure projects across England and Wales are helping to connect more renewable energy to your homes and businesses.

You'll be part of a diverse land team providing expert land rights and acquisitions services required for new electrical assets for National Grid. This will be in accordance with current legislation and guidance, best practice and procedure, to ensure National Grid adheres to its licence obligations.

We need people with the skills and enthusiasm to help deliver for our customers today and build an energy network that’s fit for the future. In return we can offer you the chance to make a real impact at work. Please view our video to learn more about what it is like to work in our teams.

In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travel to offices and project sites as required. Your portfolio of projects will predominately be in the North, so a central / northern location would be preferable (National Grid have hub offices in Warwick and Leeds). We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key accountabilities

  • Deliver all land rights and acquisitions for our infrastructure projects from development to construction, including access to land, securing land rights, and the negotiation of compensation settlements.
  • Implement National Grid Lands Rights Strategy (and other supporting policies and procedures) in a transparent, credible, consistent and economic way.
  • Report on programme, key milestone delivery, risk, contract and financial management on a regular basis. This includes being able to identify and distil complex land issues in a succinct and clear way in regular reports to the ET Property leadership team, Senior Project Managers and Project Directors.
  • Manage (often competing) internal/external stakeholder, landowner and customer requirements.
  • Procure and manage external resource to deliver required lands activities.

About you

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has:

  • Experience of delivering land activities for new infrastructure projects, including access to land, the acquisition of land, securing land rights, and the negotiation of compensation settlements.
  • Experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (engineering, legal, consenting) to support overall project delivery.
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills to ensure effective engagement with all relevant stakeholders (internally and externally).
  • Experience of providing project and contract management services as part of delivering land acquisitions and land rights projects.
  • Knowledge and experience of the legal and regulatory parameters that National Grid work within, including the range of statutory powers available, understanding how these then relate to the relevant project strategy and approach.
  • Knowledge of the consenting regimes and processes relevant to complex linear projects. This includes the Planning Act (2008) Development Consent Order and Compulsory Purchase Order processes and practice including the compensation code.
  • A willingness to train to develop expert witness expertise.
  • Preferably degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related discipline and/or working towards AssocRICS, MRICS, FRICS or FAAV.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At National Grid, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. So, if you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary between £50,000 – £63,000 – dependent on capability.
  • Market supplement of £3,000 per annum.
  • Job requirement car.
  • An annual performance bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • A comprehensive internal training programme along with support for relevant external courses.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
