National Grid is hiring a Data Strategy and Maturity Lead - This position will be based from our Warwick office - Hybrid Working model (working schedule is negotiable).
Job Purpose
The Data Strategy and Maturity Lead will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the NG data strategy and data maturity frameworks across the organisation. This role is pivotal in ensuring that National Grid’s data capabilities evolve in line with strategic ambitions, regulatory expectations, and operational needs. The role will work cross-functionally to embed maturity models, assess progress, and drive targeted interventions that elevate data literacy, governance, and value delivery.
What you'll do
- Data strategy: Shape and evolve the enterprise-wide data strategy in alignment with business goals and lead the development of data roadmaps, frameworks, and operating models.
- Maturity Framework Leadership: Own and evolve the enterprise-wide data maturity model, incorporating dimensions such as governance, quality, stewardship, literacy, and culture
- Assessment & Benchmarking: Lead periodic maturity assessments (e.g. biannual), synthesising insights from business units and functions to identify capability gaps and opportunities
- Roadmap Development: Collaborate with data owners, stewards, and business leaders to define and track maturity uplift initiatives, aligned to strategic priorities and regulatory timelines
- Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders (e.g. CDO, CIO, BU Heads), providing evidence-based recommendations and facilitating alignment across data programmes
- Capability Building: Partner with HR, L&D, and IT&D to embed data maturity drivers into workforce development plans, including training, role clarity, and accountability structures
- Governance Integration: Ensure maturity efforts are embedded into broader data governance and assurance frameworks, including policy compliance and audit readiness
- Reporting & Communication: Develop dashboards and reports to track maturity progress, communicate outcomes to executive sponsors, and support external assessments
About you
- Proven experience in data governance, data strategy, or enterprise data management, with a strong track record of leading cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong understanding of data maturity models (e.g., DAMA, DCAM, custom frameworks) and their practical application in driving organisational change.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and act as a trusted advisor, with excellent communication and facilitation skills to translate technical concepts into business value.
- Experience with data capability assessments, scorecards, and roadmap development, with a focus on identifying capability gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Familiarity with regulatory and ethical considerations in data management (e.g., GDPR, Ofgem) and a commitment to compliance and best practices.
- Proficiency in data management tools and analytics software, with relevant certifications being advantageous.
- Experience in the Utilities or energy sector is preferred, along with exposure to AI & advanced analytics maturity frameworks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a passion for continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends.
- A collaborative mindset, with the ability to foster teamwork and drive a culture of data literacy and governance across the organisation.
What you'll get
A competitive salary– £70,000 - £85,000 DOE
As well as your base salary, a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
