About the role

 

National Grid Interconnectors is at the heart of UK’s transition to our net zero energy future. We operate a number of HVDC Interconnectors that connect the UK’s energy system to some of our closest neighbours, allowing energy to be imported to and exported from the UK.

As well as already owning a portfolio of HVDC Interconnectors, we’re working on developing new projects to ensure that we are able to meet the UK’s future demands for greener energy solutions.


We are currently recruiting for a Modelling and Data Platform Manager within the Optimisation team within UJV Operations at National Grid.


The Optimisation team is responsible for developing and implementing the commercial strategy for the UJV interconnector portfolio. This involves determining the best method to sell capacity (i.e. the right to flow electricity) on the interconnectors, balancing the need to reduce business risk through hedging while also meeting budget revenue targets. 

The Modelling and Development team owns and runs a suite of modelling and forecasting tools to support our commercial decision making and optimise our revenue. These include machine learning tools to forecast the clearing prices of our capacity auctions and simulations of power price forward curves. 
As a Modelling and Data Platform Manager you will be responsible for leading a high performing team, providing ongoing coaching and development. In addition, the holder will guide a product team sitting within NGV Digital on the development of the interconnectors data platform
You will also be acting as the business owner of the ICDP (Interconnectors Data Platform), ensuring the work done by the product team is aligned to the needs and priorities of the interconnectors business.

What you'll do

 

  • Set the direction of the Modelling and Development team in support of the objectives of CCR and the wider Interconnectors business
  • Ensuring modelling tools are performing to a high standard
  • Providing all business-as-usual outputs on a regular basis
  • Leading team to respond to ad-hoc modelling and data requests, for example from senior management
  • Leading a high performing team, including coaching and developing team members
  • Maintaining strong relationships with other leaders in the Optimisation team to ensure alignment on team objectives and activities
  • Building and maintaining relationships with other leaders in CCR and Interconnectors to understanding how the team can support with modelling and data science activities
  • Act as an advocate for modelling and data science within the Interconnector business
  • Assess the needs of your stakeholders to identify contractual strategies to increase commercial value, whist taking into consideration risk & contingencies across projects.
  • Act as the lead commercial representative on any spot tenders or framework awards as required.
  • Ensure contract compliance, and lead in providing assurance and training to the IFA2 site team.
  • Lead in providing quality assurance of contracts, and delivery of cost evaluation pre-contract.
  • Lead in providing independent reviews and advice on complex variations and support the process of escalation and dispute avoidance/resolution.
  • Provide support and data to Operations and Maintenance and Operational Support Teams for any Board and/or regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Support across the Contract Management Team as required. 

What you'll need

 

  • Experience of implementing models and tools to meet business requirements.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into modelled outputs to provide business insight and be able to communicate this clearly.
  • Comfortable working with large volumes of data and knowledge of data handling and classification techniques
  • Understanding of interconnector business models and sources of revenue.
  • Experience in project development and delivery, either leading or as part of a project team.
  • Experienced in managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders/project partners.
  • Highly analytical and quantitative – demonstrated ability to critically review modelled inputs and outputs.
  • Team leadership and a proven track record in successfully developing junior colleagues
  •  Degree level qualification in a relevant discipline, high level of modelling and data management skills and experience in a related field.
  • Comfortable with leading a team
  • Strong planning and organisational skills,
  • Able to draft and present clear, concise and compelling strategic analysis and recommendations for senior management.
  • Agile and collaborative leadership style.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to influence others, work collaboratively and constructively with project partners, external stakeholders and internal teams to achieve consensus and positive outcomes.

What you'll get

 

A competitive salary between £62,000 - £75,000 – dependent on capability.
