National Grid is hiring a Safety Manager on a permanent basis. The location will be based from our Warwick office - Hybrid Working Policy 

Job Purpose

 

The Safety Manager - UK is part of the Group Safety, Health and Wellbeing team, responsible for setting the safety strategy for over 30,000 employees at National Grid. This role involves developing and overseeing the implementation of Group-wide safety governance standards, policies, and assurance frameworks, ensuring that business units meet safety obligations and compliance requirements while managing their own safety programmes.

Reporting to the Group Safety Manager, you will serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and technical support to safety teams across business units, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Group objectives.

What you'll do

 

  • Support the Group Safety Manager and collaborate with US counterparts to develop and maintain Group-wide safety policies and governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with UK and US regulations and best practices.
  • Promote a safety culture where accountability resides with Business Units and Functions, providing guidance on compliance, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee and assure business unit safety programmes, conducting audits and inspections to monitor compliance and recommend improvements.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to business unit safety teams, ensuring governance supports local safety management.
  • Develop guidance materials and best practice frameworks to enhance safety programmes and facilitate knowledge sharing across business units.
  • Lead the implementation of digital safety reporting tools and performance dashboards for real-time monitoring and proactive risk management.
  • Track leading and lagging safety indicators, using data insights to drive continuous improvement and decision-making.
  • Oversee the Group’s Safety Management System (SMS) and design safety training frameworks to ensure competency among safety professionals and operational teams.
  • Provide oversight on significant incident investigations and support the implementation of lessons learned frameworks across the Group.
  • Serve as the key interface between Group Safety and business unit teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with HR, Risk, ESG, and Operations.
  • Represent the organisation in industry groups and regulatory discussions, working with external partners to ensure compliance and continuous improvement in safety standards.

 

About you

 

  • Proven ability to lead collective ownership of safety management and drive strategic decision-making for business benefit.
  • Strong communication, relationship management, and negotiation skills, enabling effective collaboration across the organisation.
  • Experience in developing and implementing safety governance frameworks, policies, and assurance processes at a Group level.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK safety regulations (e.g., HSE, PUWER, LOLER, CDM, RIDDOR) and ISO 45001, with expertise in safety management system development.
  • Experience in digital safety transformation, including safety performance dashboards, data analytics, and digital reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical skills for safety data analysis and performance reporting, utilising leading and lagging indicators for risk management.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering safety training programmes to develop competency at all organisational levels.
  • Experience in leading safety audits, assurance processes, and compliance monitoring across multiple business units.
  • Ability to engage and influence business unit safety managers, ensuring effective knowledge sharing and governance alignment.
  • Background in regulated industries or high-risk operational environments, with knowledge of US safety legislation being advantageous.
  • Familiarity with safety technology implementation, such as AI-driven risk assessments or predictive safety analytics.

 

What you'll get

 

A competitive salary circa £60,000 - £65,000 – dependent on capability


As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 12% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
