National Grid is hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer for our Network Architecture & Innovation Team based in Warwick.

About the role

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you’ll identify and drive new and complex opportunities for National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) growth, utilising your technical expertise to convert them into tangible solutions and services, to take us further towards Net Zero.

You will develop engineering strategies identifying and driving new and complex opportunities for growth within Electricity Transmission (ET).  You will be responsible for delivering our strategy projects using SME expertise within the team and organisation, also supporting other projects with your expertise.

Carrying out power system analysis, specialist solution design and lead engineering activities that convert existing, new and complex opportunities into prototype innovative and ‘first time’ engineering solutions that can be adopted, you’ll develop models that provide engineering solution insights comparing proposed or modelled scenarios.

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing our generation. The transition to clean energy is critical to helping us achieve the goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. As National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is at the heart of the energy transition in the UK, we have a big part to play in supporting the delivery of a decarbonised energy system.

What you'll do

  • Identifying and driving new and complex opportunities for ET growth; employing technical expertise to lead their conversion into tangible products and services.
  • Conduct power flow analysis on ET network and propose designs and schemes ensuring its compliance with the SQSS.
  • Using Power System knowledge and expertise to create and analyse ET’s investment plans against future energy scenarios.
  • Developing innovative solutions to engineering challenges by combining various input data and power system analyses.
  • Use your programming and code experience (Python/SQL)
  • Communicating the ‘art of the possible’ to internal and external stakeholders via considered and approved benefits cases that are technically viable, that facilitate opportunity development, and articulate risk.
  • Deliver and execute prototype and ‘first time’ solutions that align to the ET Strategy and the needs of our customer base.
  • Transitioning opportunities to the accountable parties in the business-as-usual process, providing technical support, and supporting the strategic positioning of the ET; engaging the appropriate customer base, partners, stakeholders, government, and other entities of influence to maximise the chances of growth delivery.
  • Carrying out power system analysis, specialist solution design and lead engineering activities that convert existing, new and complex opportunities into prototype innovative and ‘first time’ engineering solutions that can be adopted, you’ll develop models that provide engineering solution insights comparing proposed or modelled scenarios.
  • Design of electrical models geared to answering long term strategic questions.
  • Analyse impact of various generation and demand profiles on the transmission network.

What you'll need

We are looking for an experienced electrical engineer with a Power Systems background and an ability to develop engineering solutions to real life scenarios and Net Zero challenges.

You’ll have a STEM degree with experience of the electrical or utilities industry and will have experience conducting power system studies and experience building models which give insights into long-term strategies. We are also looking for someone who has a knack for programming, writing and reading code (Python/SQL).

Experience of managing a solution focused team to deliver results will be needed as well as strong stakeholder management, analytical, problem-solving and project management skills.

Knowledge of how the electricity transmission industry works and one or more programming languages would be an advantage.

What you'll get

  • Annual salary of £61,000 per annum
  • Annual Performance Based Bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave plus eight statutory days.
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.

  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long as it’s relevant to your role.
  • Access to several flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
