About the role

As Great Britain’s Electricity System Operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the electricity system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand. Ultimately, we keep the electricity flowing directly to where it’s needed, second by second.


As a Balancing Services Optimisation Analyst, you’ll work within the ESO Markets team delivering critical business activities to enable participation in real-time markets, meeting the needs of our current and future customers to deliver consumer value as the GB electricity system decarbonises


You’ll support economic assessment of the Frequency product suite and inform co-optimisation strategy through analysis and insight. This is an opportunity to automate processes to increase efficiency and accuracy, ensuring a consistent application of methods, standards and good practice. You’ll support the design and implementation of current and future balancing services and play a key role in developing technical and commercial guidance.

About you

  • Strong analytical skills, advanced level of expertise in MS Excel, competent in one or more programming languages (VBA, R, Python etc.)
  • Commercial Expertise, such as a background in Economics, experience in auction design, or optimisation across inter-related markets.
  • Experienced in providing insights through visualisation (Power BI or similar experience desirable)
  • Passionate about process improvement (experience in automation desirable)
  • An ability to learn quickly and to work under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Logical, creative and practical approach to problem solving and ability to structure complex problems
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate key messages and complex issues to internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience or interest in commerciality either in (or related to) the energy industry 

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £43,000 – £55,000 – dependent on capability. Plus shift allowance.

This role closes on 27 May 2022 at 23:59, however we encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible and not wait until the published closing date as this can vary. Interviews are due to be held w/c 6 June 2022.


This position requires working on a rota pattern that includes weekends, bank holidays and providing cover out of hours on a standby basis (no night shifts). This is remunerated accordingly.


This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
