Title: Energy Data Manager (Customer & Markets) - NESO
Warwick, GB, CV34 6DA
About the Role
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is an independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system, but that’s not all we do. As the UK moves towards its 2050 net zero target, NESO has a vital part to play. We want to operate a zero-carbon electricity system some of the time by 2025 and run on clean green electricity all of the time by 2030. It’s an ambitious goal and it’s not too far away…and we can't get there without trusted and accessible data to drive the right outcomes, allowing our business and the industry the means to innovate and exploit this data to create new tools and insight that will enable decarbonisation.
NESO are looking for an Energy Data Manager to be a part of our growing data team. The purpose of this role is to engage with identified business directorates, currently aligned to Customer, Markets, and Corporate Affairs (with possible different alignments in future), to understand their business priorities and related data requirements and ensure they are delivered, in collaboration with DD&T Delivery Teams, in line with NESO data standards. This will require engagement with varying stakeholders, including Data Owners, Data Champions and wider Digital, Data & Technology (DD&T) Delivery Teams, to ensure data solutions and services are delivered in a timely, high-quality, secure, and reliable manner to meet the business objectives. The successful candidate will also foster a data mindset and shared responsibility among business directorate teams to effectively deliver data capabilities in collaboration with the central data team, ensuring data best practices are achieved and promoting continuous improvement.
This role is also responsible for establishing directorate forums, bringing key stakeholders together to discuss data management items to ensure data is managed effectively for the directorates and aligns with NESO's strategic objectives. This role may be required to attend Data Council meetings designed to oversee and govern data activities, in addition to Leadership meetings within directorates to discuss data topics and achieve close collaboration with the directorate and the data teams.
Reporting to the Data Partnering Senior Manager within the central Data function for NESO, this key role focuses on creating strong relationships with Directorates and DD&T Delivery and contributes to continuous improvements in developing the data partnering function to ensure the data team engages with directorates pragmatically and derives value to support NESO's strategic objectives and becoming a digital-first organisation. As such, it plays a key role in driving the reputation, critical delivery (both programmatic and operational), and strategy for data in NESO.
The successful candidate will need to provide thought leadership and initiative to drive a digital-first mindset, bringing modern thinking and an understanding of data. This will also require a strong combination of data management experience and depth, contributing to a strategic vision, strong team management, and relationship management with the ability to work with and influence stakeholders in achieving strategic priorities.
The role will be based in Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working with the expectation of at least 2 days per week in the office. It may require travel to NESO’s other offices in Wokingham, London, and Glasgow as needed.
Key Accountabilities

- Build and maintain strong, lasting relationships with stakeholders within Digital, Data & Technology as well as broader partnerships throughout NESO, to ensure their data needs are met and expectations are exceeded.
- Drive Data Culture and Literacy with aligned directorates to enhance the understanding of data concepts and ability to make the most of data across NESO.
- Identify and ensure risks and efficiency opportunities in data initiatives are surfaced and addressed.
- Ensure all risks and issues associated with the data-related activities from strategic programmes are captured and managed appropriately.
- Act as Subject Matter Expert with respect to data capabilities to support engagement across business initiatives.

About Us
Traditionally, Britain’s energy system has been split into two areas – gas and electricity – but to ensure that Britain’s energy system is secure and affordable there needs to be co-ordination across the whole energy system, with one single entity responsible for translating policy into immediate strategy. National Energy System Operator (NESO) will bring unparalleled change.
Forge a path to a sustainable future for everyone.
Your energy, our future, together.
About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)
In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.
The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
